We at Triton Contracting Services LLC want to help you make your kitchen or bathroom the best they can be, and one of the ways we do that is by installing new tile. The tile used in your kitchen flooring, backsplash, or bathroom shower can easily make your space look dated, so replacing it with new tile is a great way to update your space’s overall look.

Give Your Space a Fresh Look with Subway Tile

One of the most popular tile options in recent years is subway tile, and in this article, we’ll tell you all about it so you can decide if it’s right for your space.

What is Subway Tile?

For those who don’t know, the term subway tile typically refers to rectangular tiles installed horizontally with a 50% offset—in other words, the rows are staggered, just like rows of bricks. This type of tile is used extensively in New York City’s subway stations, which is where it gets its name.

Is All Subway Tile the Same?

While the tile used in the original subway stations was white and the tiles were 3×6” in dimension, these days, there is a lot of variation in subway tile (the kind used elsewhere, that is). You can choose tiles in a different color, make them longer and thinner (as long as you keep a 1:2 ratio of dimensions, the pattern will work out), increase their thickness to create a different texture, and much more. Many people are also choosing subway tile made of ceramic or glass instead of porcelain, which increases the variety even further.
